Introducing Kate McLeod

Tell us about the work you do.

The work I do is in plaster. I begin with a clay model which I then mold and recreate in a casting plaster. It’s really fun to see the piece in plaster which is white because it suggests which colors it should be. I love painting plaster because it absorbs color so beautifully. My process is to layer colours, sand them off with steel wool and add more. This gives the colour depth. I add bits of rusty wire, old metal and rhinestones to each piece.

What time of day are you most productive?

I’m most productive in the morning. I love to start work by ten.

What are you working on now?

I’m mostly working on my gardens! It’s almost impossible to stay inside this time of year.

In the next five years you would you like to accomplish.  Dream big!

In the next five years I’d love to move to Nicaragua where I can live half the year and swim every day in a volcanic crater lake.

What music do you listen to when you are working?

I listen to audiobooks while I work. I LOVE them.

Favourite colour?

My favorite colour might be orange, but that might just be because I saw an orange poppy today that was incredibly beautiful. I’m fickle like that.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate. For sure.

Movie or book?

I love movies and books.
